When I was 12, I decided to change the spelling of my name from Amy to Amie. I didn’t ask for permission—I just started writing it that way on all my schoolwork. My mom wasn’t thrilled at the time (we laugh about it now), but I was so determined that by the end of the year, my 6th-grade photo in the yearbook proudly sat beside the name Amie Thatcher.
